‘Old Harry Reflections’ – A Painting Close to My Heart

Contemporary seascape artwork of Old Harry Rocks from the Simmering Shores collection, with gold accents.

There are some places that stay with you. For me, Old Harry Rocks is one of them. Towering chalk stacks against a wide sky, waves that glimmer in the morning light—it’s dramatic and peaceful all at once. When I started painting Old Harry Reflections, I knew I wanted to capture that exact feeling.

Seascape painting of Dorset’s Old Harry Rocks in moody tones, accented with gold shimmer.

This piece is part of my Simmering Shores collection—a quiet, minimal series inspired by Dorset’s coastal landmarks. The collection is painted mostly in muted tones: deep indigos, warm burnt umbers, soft whites. But each piece carries a whisper of gold—a shimmer that catches the light, just like the sea does when it’s kissed by the sun.

Old Harry Reflections is painted in oils on a canvas that measures 79.5 x 29.3 cm, and it’s all about atmosphere. Monochrome, serene, and textured—with just a touch of gilded shimmer—it’s a painting that’s both calm and bold. A statement piece, but not one that shouts.

I find myself drawn to that balance: between land and sea, dark and light, stillness and movement. I love how the gold shifts depending on where the light hits it. It reminds me of those quiet coastal mornings, when the sea is almost still and everything feels possible.

This painting is now available in my shop and is one I’ll always hold dear. If you love the coast, texture, and those quiet moments of reflection, this might be the piece for you.
