Bringing Nature Indoors: The Story Behind “Beneath the Canopy”

Gentle abstract painting evoking a spring day under the trees.

There’s something incredibly grounding about looking up through trees. The way light filters through the leaves, casting golden highlights and dappled shadows, always reminds me to pause and take a breath. That was the inspiration behind my newest abstract watercolour print, Beneath the Canopy.

Watercolour painting with nature-inspired vertical green stripes.

This piece was born out of a quiet moment spent walking in spring. I was struck by how the foliage was both thick and fresh – sunlight streaming through in patches, while glimpses of sky peeked between the branches. I wanted to capture that feeling, not in a literal way, but as an abstract echo of the experience.

Using short vertical watercolour strokes, I layered tones of green, yellow, and indigo to create a sense of woven light and shadow. The result is a piece that feels calm, textural, and just a little bit hopeful — like spring itself.

Beneath the Canopy is perfect for any space that needs a breath of fresh air: a hallway that welcomes you home, a bedroom that offers peace, or a workspace where clarity is needed. It also makes a beautiful gift — especially for someone entering a new season or needing encouragement.

We don’t always get to walk through the woods. But with art, I believe we can bring a little of that stillness indoors.
