'Woodland Prince' – Original Watercolour Pheasant Painting -  ‘Woodland Prince’ is an original watercolour painting that celebrates the quiet majesty of one of our most recognisable countryside characters — the pheasant. There’s something almost noble about a pheasant as he steps out from the shadows of the undergrowth, his feathers catching the light in flashes of colour. I tried to capture that moment — when nature is still, and he pauses mid-stride, perfectly poised and completely himself.

Painted with professional-grade watercolours on textured, high-quality paper, this piece allowed me to really enjoy the transparency and layering that watercolour offers. I used gentle washes to evoke the woodland atmosphere — soft golden tones to suggest filtered light through leaves, deeper browns and olives to echo the underfoot crunch of a forest floor. Every feather was placed with care, not to be hyper-realistic, but to give a sense of movement, texture, and that lovely natural irregularity found in the wild.

The name ‘Woodland Prince’ came to me as I painted — he carries himself like he owns the land, alert but calm, a little wary, a little proud. It’s that personality I wanted to bring out, making this more than a wildlife portrait, but a character study in its own way.
