The Story Behind ‘The Sea Beneath Us Is Deep’ – A Journey Into Ocean Abstraction

Acrylic ocean painting with abstract layered brushstrokes of blue.

There’s something endlessly fascinating about the ocean. It’s vast, powerful, and full of secrets. When I began painting ‘The Sea Beneath Us Is Deep,’ I wanted to capture that sense of mystery—the feeling of standing on the shoreline and wondering what lies beyond the surface.

Abstract wave painting with bold textured layers of ocean colours.

This painting is part of my ongoing exploration into abstract seascapes, and it allowed me to work intuitively with colour and form. Using acrylics, I layered blues, teals, turquoise, and white in sweeping brushstrokes, allowing the paint to flow and blend like water itself. Each overlapping wave represents depth and movement, mirroring the hidden energy of the sea.

For me, the process was as important as the finished piece. It was meditative, almost like listening to the rhythm of the tide. I wanted this painting to evoke that same calm for whoever brings it into their home—a reminder of the stillness and strength found in nature’s vast waters.

Available as a print, ‘The Sea Beneath Us Is Deep’ would look stunning in a contemporary living space, a coastal-inspired home, or an office that needs a touch of tranquillity. It’s more than wall art—it’s an invitation to pause and breathe.
